Selenge Tsermaa's sixteen year old grandaughter pauses in the morning before beginning work for the day. Each summer Tsermaa's three grandchildren spend three months working and living with their grandmother. If it was up to them they would live there year round. They enjoy the work, the environmnt andspending time with their grandmother. Selenge one day hopes to become a police officer. Tsermaa boils water for the day with the hills of Terelj National Park behind her. All cooking is done on this outdoor stove that is fueled with wood and dung. The diet of Mongolians consists of mainly dairy and meat. Tsermaa takes a break while one of her twenty cows wanders curiously about and sips on some salty milk tea which is the most common drink found throughout Mongolia. Inspite of how it sounds it is actually pretty good. Tsermaa sits next to an empty stool where her husband once sat. He passed away in 1997 and Tsermaa continued stay in Terelj and look after their anmals on her own. It's the life she wants. It's the life she loves and at the age of sixty-four is still very capable of doing so. Tsermaa pauses inside of her Ger. Tsermaa has turned her Ger into a very comfortable space complete with a nightstand covered with personally significant items including a picture of the Dalai Lama.Tsermaa like the majority of Mongolian people is a Budhist. Twice a year she packs up her two Gers and moves. In the fall she moves up the valley a few kilometers for more protection from the harsh Mongolian winter. Then back down in the spring where the land is easier to manage her animals. Some young sheep herders take their sheep out to pastor on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Tamir Tsermaa's thirteen year old grandson takes his grandmother's sheep and goats to the river on a hot summer day. Tamir loves spending his summer vacations helping his grandmother. He can swim in the river eat well play with other boys that live in near by Gers. One day he hopes to become a doctor. Tsermaa stands in one of only a few spots near her home that picks up the network signal and speaks to her daughter, who lives in South Korea. She says that both her son and daughter call at least once a day to make sure she is doing all right. Cell phone coverage in Mongolia is very sporadic in Mongolia but more and more people are using them.

The state has no formal obligation to these kids so the village relies entirely on donations and grows much of it's own food. The following are images from Sun Village. Two of the younger children at Sun Village look on curiously during snack time. Many of these kids don't know why they are staying at Sun Village. The western philosophy of confronting issues has not penetrated China's deny and repress philosophy creating a sense of uneasiness for many of these kids. Two of the children in the Nursery dormitory of Sun Village entetain themselves in the sleeping quarters. A shelf full of shoes in fron of one of the dormitories. All clothing items used by the children of Sun Village come from donations. Dormitories are kept very clean and the children's beds are always kept tidy. A part of the discipline regement at Sun Village. Zhang Shuqin,58, director of Sun Village at her desk with her pet dog. The kids call her Granny Zhang Zhou Meihong age 4 loves to practice her Chinese characters. Zhou's parents are in prison in Yunnan on drug charges. Briefly cared for by her grandparents, Zhou's parents asked for her to come to Sun Village. One of the resident caregivers holds one of the younger children staying in the Nursery dormitory at Sun Village. Xu Zhi, 12, and her younger brother Xu Dongdong(not pictured) both from Chongqing. Their father was jailed in 1992 and escaped 2 years later. Divorced from Xu Zhi's mother he remarried while on the run and had Dongdong. He was then recaptured in 2004. He had 5 years added onto his original sentence. Xu Dongdong's mother disappeared after his father was recaptured. Two boys are made to face the wall for acting out during a physical education class. Discipline is a big part of the daily regement at Sun Village. Some of the Children of Sun Village line up in preperation for a run aroulnd the grounds of the village for gym class. Located on thirty acres of land Sun Village is able to grow much of it's own food and houses 100 children in a variety of different dormitory buildings. Some children of Sun Village line up and listen to the fitness instructor before doing exercises. Some boys hang out in front of one of the dormitory buildings of Sun Village. All of the dorms have been donated by different orginizations such as Chrysler and the International Rotary Club. Peng Yongzhen the mother of ten year old twin daughters Li Jing and Li Bao from Jishou city, Hunan Province. After her release from Prison Peng joined her daughters at Sun Village as a The kids of Sun Village gather in the eatery before dinner and line up single file. Discipline is a big part of the daily regement at Sun Village. A child of Sun Village carries food at dinner time in the eatery. Sun Village grows much of its own food and has been able to cut the eating costs of each child down to 3 yuan(about 35 US cents) a day. Jia Dong, 15, one of two brothers from Qingtongxia in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Jia and his younger brother both arrived at Sun Village after their father murdered their mother and was later executed for his crime.

The animosity stems from the wartime atrocities commited by the Japanaese army throughout China. Twice in the past year Chinese aggression towards the Japanese has boiled over, Once last year during the Asian Soccer Cup final and then again this year during Anti-Japan protests that began in the capital and spread to other cities in China. Saturday 9 April 2005: Political ties between China and Japan have at times been cordial since the end of World War ll, but there is a clear animosity amongst the general population in China towards Japan. The animosity stems from the wartime atrocities commited by the Japanaese army throughout China. Twice in the past year Chinese aggression towards the Japanese has boiled over, Once last year during the Asian Soccer Cup final and then again this year during Anti-Japan protests that began in the capital and spread to other cities in China. Many believe these violent protests were subtly encouraged by the government. These image are from the protest at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.
